Leggett & Platt adjustable bed – stopped adjusting 02/07/2023
Just my luck another thing stopped working properly on the same day. I adjusted my bed to watch some tv last night and everything was great until I realized I needed to make fine tuning to the settings. I picked up my handy remote and pressed the down button and nothing happened. In fact the bed complete lost communication with the remote and blue tooth. Sadly there was no manual method of resetting the bed without taking the actuator clips off of the bed frame. That is not something one cares to do at 10:30pm. Thinking quickly my wife reminded me that the two 9 volt batteries that are somehow necessary on the bed that plugs into the wall might have gone bad. Yep, that in deed was a problem since the 1st battery I pulled out was completely corroded. I guess the one adjustment I was able to make depleted any power left in that battery. These were Duracell mind you, not the cheap Chinese crap available at your local dollar stores. I thought I was going to luck out because I had 2 extra batteries. One of the 2 “fresh” batteries lost one of its metal connectors while I was removing the plastic bits meant to keep the battery fresh. So much for brand name quality. I ended up having to sleep elsewhere for the night.
The next morning I went into troubleshooting mode and discovered there is very little information available on the internet about my problem. Some of the best content was a troubleshooting guide that suggested…
- Try the following troubleshooting steps or contact Leggett & Platt Adjustable Base Customer Support.
- Program the remote control. Instructions for programming procedures are in your remote control manual. Download your remote control manual.
- Unplug power cord, wait 30 seconds, and plug in to reset electronic components.
- Electrical circuit breaker may be tripped. Check electrical service breaker box to verify.
- Defective surge protection device or electrical outlet. Test outlet by plugging in another working appliance.
I mean really? It wasn’t a surprise to me when the steps failed to correct the problem. I ended up following these steps to get my bed functional again.
- Replaced the old 9-volt batteries with fresh Energizer branded batteries. For some reason, even though these beds are plugged into 110v with 2 power packs feeding different components, the bed requires 2 9 volt batteries to power the blue tooth receiver. With these batteries both the remote and smart phone app are unable to communicate with the bed. Terrible design. Incidentally the LED lights under the bed are also controlled via the remote/app. Unfortunately this did not fix my problem but it did get the blue tooth receiver working again.
- I attempted to control the bed using my Android app and since the app is more feature rich than the remote the bed reported an error. What was the error? An obstruction was detected, immediately inspect and clear obstruction. I thought wow, now I’m getting somewhere. The only problem is that there was no obstruction. I did a little more research and learned there is a sensor on the bed that automatically stops the adjustment process if the sensor is tripped. The advice I found was to clean the sensor of any dust. Well I couldn’t find where to clear dust but I did find the sensor. I ended up unplugging the sensor from the system and this time I was able to get the bed working again. Well except for the LED lights. Apparently it was also a good idea to run the power to the LED lights through the sensor as well.
At the end of the day, I have a working bed sans LED lights (which I never use) at the cost of a few hours of my time and $10 for 2 9-volt batteries. I could have been worse.
