Roof Leak

Roof Leak

After what has felt like a week of constant rain I finally noticed I have a leak in my roof. It’s the middle of January in Texas and we just finished winter storm Penelope and entered into a week of warmer temperatures and rain, lots of rain. Today I ran to get my truck inspected for the annual state inspection. The funny thing about the state inspection is that next year begins the new law which cancels the annual state inspection. Why we have to do it at all this year seems pretty stupid, but then again Texas isn’t known for great decision making lately. I digress.

Looking at the evidence on the floor, a puddle of water led me to think it came from the car. I’ve seen this pool before but always associated it with the car dripping off in the garage. Nope, not this time the car was bone dry.

Now I realize the leak has been there for awhile. Looing up directly above the pool on the floor I noticed the dry wall tape has buckled and the dry wall feels damp.

Outside above the drip line is the culprit. The sky lights that I don’t use. Neither did the owner before us. The skylights are stuffed with 6 inch foam presumably to stop the light and heat from entering the guest bedroom. Poor design.

Next step is to fix the problem. I’m going to go on my roof and check out around those skylights. Maybe it’s an easy fix. I can use roof asphalt or flex seal to go around the flashing and I can silicone over any exposed nail heads. It shouldn’t take much to fix the issue but the roof is wet today, so this project needs to wait until the roof is dry. Maybe this weekend.
